The Transition is Often Challenging

The transition from the military to civilian life is challenging for most veterans, their spouses, and family.  It can be like stepping off a cliff into the abyss of the unknown. Yet, there is little practical guidance available and few veterans prepare to do it in advance.  The visible and invisible wounds of war take their toll. The search to re-find purpose is almost always daunting. We do our veterans a disservice by not warning them, let alone by not giving them tools with which to engage in the new challenging journey.

Our Call to Action

How do we honor the promise we should make to veterans – that we will support your transition to civilian life after you have served and sacrificed for us?  Our country is at an historical inflection point with the end of the 20 years of war in Iraq and Afghanistan. There are more veterans alive today than ever in our history (about 22 million), with about 250,000 getting out every year and about 15 million spouses and family members -- not counting about 3.5 million active-duty service members and government contractors and those that care for or work with veterans and their spouses and families — which we estimate to total about 40 million people in our country.  Why does this matter?  General Washington admonished us when he said, “a country will be judged by how it treats its veterans.” We can do more and we are here to help.

Our Mission & Who We Serve

Beyond our book, our mission is to accelerate the transition to a fulfilling civilian life of one million veterans and their families in the next ten years, implementing our VVV® Veterans Victory Voyage (veterans integration program) within purpose-driven companies. We are dedicated to serving those who have stood for us.

ABOUT THE BOOK

Warrior to Civilian: The Field Manual for the Heroes Journey is the definitive guide to the transition from military to civilian life for veterans, their spouses and families.  Rob and Alex have dedicated themselves to its work for the past five years, including over 200 interviews with veterans, a variety of experts and others, they have researched and read hundreds of books, articles and blogs. It has also involved deeply personal soul searching by us about our own life transitions (including Rob’s from the SEAL teams), successes, failures, losses, heartaches and a search to re-find purpose in our lives. It has become their life missions.

Some highlights:

  • it provides practical advice about all aspects of the transition – something that can take up to 1-2 years in advance

  • the best doctors and therapists in the country advise on healing the visible and invisible wounds of war

  • it creates frameworks for re-finding purpose and using the concept of the Heroes Journey to do that

  • it is the only book to contain a complete, extensive chapter for spouses and family members

  • a critical and often forgotten part of the transition

  • we explain in a new way the concept of how to live a life of meaning, fulfillment and joy as a civilian warrior
